Hi everyone,

This is Aiman (she/her), and I’ve joined Chayn as a Communications Manager. I’m based out of Islamabad, Pakistan. Supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) is a cause close to my heart, and I feel so fortunate that by being a part of Chayn, I can play my part in our fight against the patriarchy.

During my university years, I studied Literature, Sociology and Anthropology, and these subjects, along with my friendships, were foundational in my growth as a feminist. Post-graduation, I wanted to keep writing so I worked in an editorial capacity at a local magazine. We published cultural reporting from Pakistan and China, and since I enjoyed my job, I decided to train as a journalist.

With a Fulbright scholarship I moved to the U.S., where I completed a Masters in Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia in May 2021. While there, I did research with the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, and published stories in the Columbia Missourian, Vox Magazine, Nieman Storyboard and StarChefs.

Tacos on the Block for StarChefs was a part of their 2021 Los Angeles issue. You can read more of my work with StarChefs here.

This Story Craft piece for Nieman Storyboard, published in 2021, focused on a story by Mayukh Sen, an award-winning food writer. Read it here.

As a journalist, I’ve been trained to produce a range of texts but in all my writing, I’ve always focused on communities and cultures. It’s been important to me that my work is ethically-grounded, uplifts unheard voices and allows for a diversity of experiences to come across.

Though I don’t have much experience in the non-profit sector, being at Chayn just feels right. In my two weeks, I’ve already learnt tons from my colleagues, and each day brings new lessons on how to use tech for good and develop resources for survivors. As a communications manager, I want to strengthen our storytelling, establish consistent and efficient systems, and increase our outreach through trauma-informed communications. Within the global GBV ecosystem, Chayn plays a unique role, and I hope to highlight that through the projects I will undertake.

I want Chayn to develop long-term relationships with volunteers, partners and stakeholders, so feel free to drop me a line at aiman at chayn dot co or on Twitter with questions, thoughts or just a hello.

What blogs and accounts should I be following? What newsletters should I sign up to? Have you seen a report I should read? I’m all in. I’d love to chat and get to know you! Speak soon.
